While winemaking at the Calon estate dates all the way back to the 12th century, the château really took off in the 18th century when legendary winemaker Nicolas-Alexandre, the Marquis de Ségur — also known as the "prince of vines" — took over the property. The marquis was passionate about this winery, once saying that "I make wine at Lafitte and Latour but my heart is at Calon Segur" (hence the heart on the wine's label). The estate went on to acquire the rank of Third Growth in the Bordeaux 1855 classification.

Today the château is owned by the Suravenir company, who are in the process of extensively renovating the estate while being careful to preserve its historic values.

The 55-hectare, single-block vineyard is entirely surrounded by a stone wall; the only vineyard in the Médoc to be so. Dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon — which makes up over three-quarters of the blend — the vineyard also grows Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot.

Notes and Reviews

Robert Parker (91)

Back when my bottle reports came out in 2003, I urged extreme patience for this wine, which is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc. I projected a maturity curve of 2012-2040, but based on this tasting, I would say the wine needs another 5-6 years, so call it 2016-2040+. One of the most unyielding wines in my tastings of the 2000s, the wine still has a very healthy, deep, dark ruby colour, and earthy hints of herbs, liquorice, and black currants. Medium- to full-bodied, the hard, elevated tannins give this wine a certain austerity, but its outstanding weight, richness, and that very classic style argue for further discipline. Forget this for another 3-4 years and drink it over the following three decades.

James Suckling – Wine Spectator (93)

Lovely berry, spice, and leather aromas follow through to a medium- to full-bodied palate, with firm and silky tannins and a long, caressing finish. A harmonious wine.

Stephen Tanzer – International Wine Cellar (90)

Full red-ruby. Musky aromas of tart red berries, smoke, and meat, with a light medicinal nuance. Suave on entry, then rather tightly wound, even a bit youthfully dry. Fairly rich wine, but the redcurrant, smoke, and spice flavours are presently dominated by solid underlying structure. Finishes firmly tannic, with sneaky persistence.
