"Guigal La Mouline is not a single-vineyard wine. It is a trademarked name. The first vintage for Guigal La Mouline took place in 1966. The vines were purchased from Joannes Dervieux. At the time, the vines were used to produce “La Cote Blonde”. However, bottlings of La Mouline were also made, some bearing green capsules. Even then, the wines produced from this site for the Dervieux family were considered to be among the best in the appellation.
"But as good as those wines were, Côte-Rôtie sold for so little money back then, that part of the already small vineyard was planted with fruit trees, most of which were apricot trees. When the vineyard was purchased by Guigal, it was a whopping .90 hectares. Today, it’s grown in size to one hectare of vines. It was not until 1971 that Guigal decided that ageing the wine in 100% new French oak barrels was better for the wine. La Mouline is usually the first of the three top wines from Guigal to be harvested. This is due to its specific, slightly warmer, precocious microclimate.

Still ageing in barrel, the 2014 Côte-Rôtie La Mouline is really charming, sexy stuff. Soaring florals emerge from the glass, accompanied by notes of dark fruit, espresso and grilled meat. Silky and seductive, it should drink well young yet be capable of developing for 20 years.
